Known as Chevy Chase, the 3,958-square-meter, six-bedroom house includes a recreational pavilion and gazebo, overlooking a 12.5-meter swimming pool, spa, and rolling lawns.
There is also a 14 car garage, library, music room, basement, 4 bathrooms, 2 dining rooms and 2 kitchens.
Part of the main building, the three-story tower offers 360-degree views of Melbourne and Port Phillip Bay.
Designed by renowned architect Frederick Williams, this elegant hotel is named after a 14th-century ballad about a battle between Scottish and English armies.
Deemed significant by the Victorian Heritage Register due to its “considerable architectural and historical importance”, the property was originally built for publisher Andrew Thompson.
Register records show the house has been repainted — except for the dining room
room and lightwell — both in original condition.
“Both the early Boom-style design and plan of the house are representative of mansions of the time,” the record reads.
“The location of the tower behind the main façade is unusual.”
The Chevy Chase was last sold in 2005 for $1.9 million, according to CoreLogic.
Brighton East’s previous $7.55 million home price record was set last year by a five-bedroom pad at 13 Creswick Street sold by Todd Dixon, son of Mr. Dixon, who works for Buxton Bentley.
