Erin Moran’s documentary reveals football star’s racist hell Sky News Australia

Western Sydney Wanderers striker Kusini Yenghi was just 22 when he experienced instinctive racism on social media for celebrating a goal.

The A-League player was playing for Adelaide United when he scored against Melbourne Victory in 2021.

What was supposed to be a special memory for the rising star spurred on something much uglier. It was trolling online because of his racial background.

“My phone was blasting. Some were cheering me on, but I think the majority were Melbourne Victory fans who weren’t too happy with the way I celebrated my goal.” Background told the Daily Telegraph.

“None of the messages had anything to do with me as a football player.[It was]about me being black and young and expressing myself.”

The 23-year-old said he faced a never-ending cycle of abuse. “Usually the abuse stops as soon as you leave the pitch and you are free again,” he said.

“But with all the stuff…on social media, I came home and was sitting in my living room…it’s supposed to be my safe space…a place to relax, but then I checked my phone, Then bang, someone will abuse me.

Yengi’s online trolling experience is extensively fleshed out in an interview with documentary Erin Moran. Haters Online: Erin Moran hits back, premieres on Sky News Australia Tuesday night.

This is the world’s first partnership between the A-League, Professional Footballers Australia, the Players Union and the software company GoBubble community, aimed at protecting players from abuse on social media.

By scanning for offensive words, phrases, symbols, images and emojis, the technology prevents users and their followers from seeing them.

The A-League is Australia’s first sports code to implement the A-League after a growing number of sports stars called for better censorship of online abuse on social media platforms.

“Of course, I don’t think I’ve ever needed software that had to filter these comments,” Yengi said. “I wish people hadn’t made these comments in the first place.”
