“I have a four-year-old teething baby, and when I entered the house, I saw the owner sitting under the wisteria trellis,” Dix said.
“He was a lawyer, and I was there playing the violin with my wife and I was like, ‘This is so beautiful.’ A house like this has character, it has a voice. became.
Still, the garden was whimsical and full of points of interest. What South African-born Dix and her husband Joe were looking for was the perfect blend of home and nature.
“I wanted this to be my family’s sanctuary,” she said.
Years after purchasing the home, the pair are now tasked with architect Stephen Ayckhurst and landscape guru Rick Eckersley working together to expand the home and better connect with nature. doing.
The result is a perfect blend of a Victorian façade and a more modern rear, creating a garden voice throughout the home.
The landscaping also provides a backdrop for a pool, a pavilion with a powder room, a pergola with a piped barbecue, and a separate studio with a bathroom.
Mature trees surrounding the home provide privacy on the roof deck, and the two often enjoyed a glass of wine or tea with a Jack Russell at their feet.
It’s their take on the violin under the wisteria that they hope the next owner will share.
“That’s what we miss most,” Dix said. “I hope the next owner will sit there and think, ‘This is so beautiful.'”
With a mansard roof over 4m high and a kitchen and living area with expansive glass walls including bi-fold doors leading to the backyard, there are many things that are hard to let go of.
Aesthetics aside, the kitchen is also functional, with a mix of Miele and Gaggenau appliances and a Butler pantry.
The open-plan extension includes a dining area and family room, while the original footprint of the home includes a formal dining room, study, and large living room with bay windows that open onto the front yard.
The main bedroom suite has a roof terrace and a private bathroom and dressing room upstairs.
The remaining three bedrooms have en-suite bathrooms or access to a central travertine-tiled bathroom.
Dix founded the Prahren Gallery Othomis Contemporary, where artists such as Sophia Shirazy and Greg Wood have visited for meals and soiree.
Fittingly, the home renovation added a gallery-style hanging system, allowing collectors to hang pieces from hidden aluminum wires where the ceiling and walls meet.
Scott Patterson, executive director of Kay & Burton Hawthorn, said the “extremely picturesque” home enchants families with its “enchanted gardens.”
“A two-story Victorian building with a 900-square-meter pool in the heart of Hawthorne is very impressive,” says Patterson.
“Everyone who stepped in here immediately felt very comfortable.”
The property has a price guide of $5.8 million to $6.3 million and a private auction is scheduled for October 26th.
