Iran Protests: Notorious Evin Prison Erupts in Endangered Country

As Iran is rocked by its most intense unrest in decades, footage has been posted online showing a massive fire at the infamous Evin prison, with flames and smoke billowing from the area.

Protests are taking place in at least a dozen cities across the country again on Saturday.

They first erupted last month when anger boiled over the death of 22-year-old Kurdish Iranian Masa Amini in police custody.

Iranian state media reported on Saturday that the situation was “under control” after “troubles” broke out between inmates and guards at Evin Prison, sparking a fire.

Citing a senior security official, the IRNA news agency said there was “trouble and clashes on Saturday night” at the prison and that a “rioter” had started a fire.

At least eight people were injured, IRNA said, citing firefighters at the scene.

A security source said, “The situation is now fully under control.

“Calm down, firefighters are working to put out the fire,” the source said, adding that “thugs” set fire to the clothing storage area.

Video footage shared on social media showed flames and plumes of smoke billowing above the prison.

The official website of the judiciary, Mizan Online, said part of the prison caught fire “after a fight between several detainees.”

Citing the Prison Service, Mizan said police were “asked to help prison guards regain their composure in Evin as quickly as possible.”

“The fire has been put out,” the report said.

The prison unrest comes after weeks of protests in Iran since the death of Martha Amini on September 16, three days after she was arrested by Tehran’s moral police on suspicion of violating a strict dress code for women. Occurs when shaken.

Violence in the streets has killed dozens of people, mostly protesters but also members of the security forces, and hundreds have been arrested.
