Champion jockey James McDonald will try to keep his undefeated Geelong Cup record together in Wednesday’s $500,000 Group 3 handicap in the 2400m, teaming with Chris Waller-trained Surefire.
McDonald rode only once in the Melbourne Cup qualifier in 2015 when he led the David Hayes and Tom Duburnig-trained Al Moonkiss to victory in the race.
In this year’s Geelong Cup, 17 runners and a full field of 17 could face the starters after two states of emergency were declared.
Eleven of the Geelong Cup Mix horses are looking to start in a 24-horse track for the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup.
Danny O’Brien’s Midnight Blue comes closest to making it to the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field and sits 26th in the order of entries.
David Simcock-trained Rodrigo Diaz is the only rider competing in the Geelong Cup this year.
