James McDonald targets Geelong Cup win

Champion jockey James McDonald will try to keep his undefeated Geelong Cup record together in Wednesday’s $500,000 Group 3 handicap in the 2400m, teaming with Chris Waller-trained Surefire.

McDonald rode only once in the Melbourne Cup qualifier in 2015 when he led the David Hayes and Tom Duburnig-trained Al Moonkiss to victory in the race.

In this year’s Geelong Cup, 17 runners and a full field of 17 could face the starters after two states of emergency were declared.

Eleven of the Geelong Cup Mix horses are looking to start in a 24-horse track for the $8 million Lexus Melbourne Cup.

Danny O’Brien’s Midnight Blue comes closest to making it to the 24-horse Melbourne Cup field and sits 26th in the order of entries.

David Simcock-trained Rodrigo Diaz is the only rider competing in the Geelong Cup this year.

Three international horses have doubled the Geelong and Melbourne Cups: Media Puzzle in 2002, Americain in 2010 and Dunaden in 2011.

Rodrigo Diaz at $5, Surefire at $6, Macram at $6.50, Francesco Guardi at $9 and Interpretation at $4.20 are the favorites at TAB’s Geelong Cup Market.
