Kyiv attacked by Russian kamikaze drones
Kyiv: The central Shevchenkivsky district of the Ukrainian capital was hit by the second blast in a week early Monday morning, with Mayor Vitali Klitschko said several homes were damaged.
“Rescue teams are on the scene,” Klitschko said on the Telegram message service, adding that what he said was a drone attack, resulting in fires in non-residential buildings as well.
There was no immediate information on casualties.
The Shevchenkivsky district, a bustling hub of universities, student bars and restaurants, is the site of Russia’s largest airstrike against a Ukrainian city in retaliation for an explosion on a bridge connecting mainland Russia with Crimea. Ordered was hit by several explosions last Monday.
Andriy Yermak, chief of staff at the Ukrainian president’s office, said the attack was carried out with a so-called suicide drone.
“Russians think this will help, but such behavior is just their convulsions,” Yermak said on the Telegram messaging app.
Ukraine has reported a spate of Russian attacks by Iranian-made Shahed-136 drones in recent weeks. Iran has denied supplying drones to Russia, but the Kremlin has not commented.
