Redfern Terrace, with its burnt-out backyard and charred Hills hoist, is reminiscent of scenes from the classic movie Muriel’s Wedding.

In the film, Muriel’s mother sets her overgrown backyard on fire before committing suicide in what critics say symbolizes the destruction of the “Australian dream” of owning a home.

The cause of the fire in the backyard of 18 Turner Streeta three-bedroom ‘neglected’ terrace to be auctioned on November 5th.

However, it is expected to be a popular property with one group of buyers. The builder says he may be willing to pay as much as $1.5 million for a 156-square-meter prime block on the north side.

Property records show that it sold for just £600 when it was bought in 1952 by Harold Ernest Neilsen, a Redfern tram driver.

The dilapidated condition of the terrace cannot be hidden.

Hayden Richards and Charles Thoma, of the Ray White Thoma Group, the agents responsible for selling the now highly run-down property, are making no attempt to disguise its condition.

“It’s awful, awful, very unloved,” says Richards.

“Floors are crumbling, stairs and wood all need to be replaced, gardens not maintained.”

But because of the larger block sizes in inner-city areas, Richards believes builders and “flippers” looking for “passionate projects” might see the potential.

However, the size of the land and the possibility of two dwellings are expected to attract builders.

“With parliamentary permission, we could even have two residences side by side,” says Richards.

Once a dangerous and violent neighborhood for taxis, this part of Redfern is now popular with young professionals and a growing number of families.

The Australian dream lives on.
