Mysterious ‘disgusting’ item washed up on Queensland beach
A strange-looking item washed up on a Queensland beach has sparked online debate, with scientists admitting they don’t know what the object is.
An Australian woman was walking on Magnetic Island in the far north of the state when she came across a large gray object.
“Yeah, I hate it,” she said at the end of the clip.
The video quickly went viral, with some suggesting the item was a human leg.
In a second video, the user claimed the mystery was solved when online investigators identified the item as a whale penis.
But wildlife scientist Dr Vanessa Pirotta, speaking to 9news.com.au, casts further doubts on this.
“I can see how people assumed it looked very similar to a male whale’s penis,” she said.
“(But) I don’t know what it is.
“It could even be part of another marine animal, such as shark liver.”
In a world-first vision, one of the killer whales rips open a shark’s liver and eats it.
They are suspected of hunting humpback whales on the “whale trail” on their way back to the cooler Antarctic waters.
