Pope urges UN reform after Ukraine war, Covid ‘restrictions’

Pope Francis said in an excerpt from his new book published on Sunday that the need to reform the United Nations is “more than obvious” after the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine have exposed its limits.

The Argentinian pope said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February ensured that current multilateral structures, particularly the UN Security Council, would find “more agile and effective ways to resolve the conflict”. He said that the need to do so was highlighted.

The organization was founded to prevent the horrors of the two world wars from recurring, but while the threat represented by those conflicts was still alive, “today’s world is no longer the same.” Francis said.

Francis denounced the unequal distribution of vaccines as a “clear example” of the law that stronger than solidarity prevails.

The Pope also proposed to guarantee food, health, economic and social rights on which international organizations base their decisions.
