Queensland woman ‘spends life in constant pain’ after failed hysterectomy at McKay Base Hospital

The Queensland mum of two says she has spent her life in constant pain after a failed vasectomy at Mackay Base Hospital last year.

Monique Miles, 35, may be in the prime of her life, but says she “can’t remember the last time I was happy” because of the excruciating pain she feels every day.

“When you’re in so much pain, it clouds everything, so I don’t know when was the last time I was happy or felt happy,” Miles told 9News.

She is just one of many patients suffering from inadequate and substandard care provided in hospitals.

A few weeks ago, Queensland’s Health Minister Yvette Das nearly broke down in tears when she revealed the findings of the hospital’s obstetrics and gynecology services.

A gruesome report found that a number of serious missteps led to the deaths of three infants and inflicted lifelong physical and mental injuries on women.

D’Ath has promised to meet with the affected women he desires and will finally deliver on that promise tomorrow at a private forum at Mackay College.

But it probably does little to comfort a woman like Miles, who said she shouldn’t have been exposed to this “mess” in the first place.

Miles, who nearly died of sepsis after surgery in which doctors removed his uterus and cervix, now needs complete reconstructive surgery.

“My ovaries aren’t where they should be,” she said.

“I have things fused inside.

“We need to lose more organs that shouldn’t be lost.

“I don’t need to be rebuilt trying to clean up a mess that shouldn’t have been made in the first place.”

Despite providing her account to the Obstetrics and Gynecology Services investigation, Miles said, “The clinical review board determined that the medical complications experienced were a known risk to clinical care.” It is said that

She will not be offered any compensation.

“To say, ‘We take no responsibility, we did nothing, we take no responsibility for hurting you’ … feels bad,” she said.

Tomorrow’s miles will be one of many hopeful answers.

“It’s like they set us on fire,” she said.

“You threw a box of matches at us and said it was your fault we didn’t do anything.”
