Russian fighter jet crashes into flat in southern city of Yeysk

Yeysk, Russia: At least two people have reportedly died after a Russian fighter plane crashed into a home in the southern Russian city of Yeysk, engulfing the apartment building in a giant fireball.

A video released by military news channel Zvezda on Monday (Russian time) appeared to show an explosion aboard the plane as it plummeted toward an apartment building.

Regional Governor Veniamin Kondratiev said the plane was a Sukhoi Su-34, a supersonic medium-range fighter-bomber.

News outlets said emergency authorities said at least 15 people were injured. They said the pilot had ejected.

The state-owned RIA said the crash occurred during a training flight from a military airfield. The Defense Department said the pilot said the engine caught fire on takeoff and the plane’s fuel caught fire when it hit a building.

Russia’s State Commission of Investigation for Serious Crimes said it had filed a criminal case and sent investigators to the scene.

The Kremlin said it had informed President Vladimir Putin and ordered him to provide all necessary assistance to the victims. He has ordered the health and emergency ministers to fly to the area, it said.
