Russo-Ukrainian War: ‘Kamikaze’ Drone Attack Hits Kyiv

The Ukrainian capital was rocked by a deafening blast this morning and only awoke just a week later as Russia hit the metropolitan center with a horrific attack on civilians.

Local residents reported several explosions and air raid sirens blaring in Kyiv around 6:30 am.

Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed that one explosion had occurred in the city’s Shevchenkivsky district. One strike damaged homes and another targeted the Central Station.

According to Andriy Yermak, head of the president’s office, the city was attacked by kamikaze drones.

“The capital was attacked by a kamikaze drone,” said Andriy Yermak, the president’s chief of staff, on social media.

“Russians think it will help them, but it shows their desperation,” he added.

“We need more air defense systems and as soon as possible. More weapons to protect the skies and destroy the enemy.”

New York Times reporter Megan Spacia said they were “ratted out of our sleep” by the commotion. Experts believe Iranian-made Shard 129 drones deployed by Russia may be to blame.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said last week that Iranian drones were used in Russian attacks on energy infrastructure across the country.

Iran denies supplying munitions for its invasion of Russia.

Ukraine correspondent Christopher Miller said: “Before the explosion in Kyiv, there was a hum that resembled the engine of a large lawn mower, suggesting Shahed’s drones may have been used in the attack. It suggests something,” he said.

There are no reports of casualties.

City officials are urging locals to remain at the shelter until further notice.

On October 10, Russian missiles rained down on Kyiv and other cities across Ukraine in the biggest wave of attacks since late June.

The attack killed at least 19 people, injured 105, and sparked international protests.

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the attack was in retaliation for an attack on a bridge connecting Russia and the Crimean peninsula.

More coming.
