Teenage chess prodigy Gukesh D defeats world champion Magnus Carlsen
Indian chess prodigy Domaraj Gukesh has become the youngest player to beat Magnus Carlsen since he became world champion a decade ago.
Key Point:
- Gukesh is one of many young Indian chess stars who recently defeated Carlsen.
- Gukesh said he was happy to beat Carlsen but was “not very proud of that match”.
- In 2019, Gukesh became the second youngest grandmaster ever.
The 16-year-old – better known in the chess world as Gukesh D – defeated a Norwegian grandmaster with a white piece in the ninth round of the Aimchess Rapid tournament on Monday morning (AEDT).
Carlsen was winning, but resigned shortly after the debacle that gave his opponent a clear advantage.
“Obviously, beating Magnus is always something special, but I wasn’t very proud of the game.
However, the world champion said Gukesh made the most of the opportunity.
“It’s always nice to win,” Carlsen said, “but perhaps this rapid victory wasn’t his most proud effort.
Gukesh D has long been regarded as one of the rising stars of chess in the world.
In early 2019, he became the second-youngest grandmaster ever, at just 12 years, 7 months and 17 days.
He has announced that he has qualified for this year’s Chess Olympiad on an eight-game winning streak.
He is one of the stars of a new generation of young Indian athletes taking the sport by storm.
After losing to 19-year-old Arjun Eligaisi over the weekend, Carlsen lost to two Indian teenagers in the same few days.
He has also lost to another Indian teenager, 17-year-old Rameshbabu Praggnanandhaa, three times this year.
“Pragg is the only one who has lost multiple times,” Carlsen said.
“When it comes to Arjun and Gukesh, Arjun I’ve beaten in general, but Gukesh is very similar.
“[But] I think Gukesh has been very impressive in classical chess lately. “
