The Darkness, Enmore Theater’s Southern River Band, Review
It was a night of rock and roll to remember at Sydney’s Enmore Theater on Sunday. When the headbangers put on an old-school feast of gut-shaking riffs, screeching guitar solos, falsetto vocals and too-tight spandex pants.
Opening the show was Southern River Band, Perth-based hard rockers who proved that Australian guitar-based music is not dead.
If you haven’t heard their songs, please check them out. With a face-melting set that spanned hard blues, a ripping punk song about smoking cigarettes, and a riveting song about a trader who eventually made a career, he wowed Sydney crowds. In crack and prison.
The hardest headbanging was reserved for a raunchy number called “Chimney,” featuring riffs so heavy that Black Sabbath would be proud.
The packed house, nicely unwinded, was ready for The Darkness to fire on all cylinders.
It’s a show where frontman Justin Hawkins hops in a green leotard with a crotch-cut V, “Stage Invaders,” handstands, devastating guitar solos, threats of faces being rearranged, Freddie Mercury style. call, audience and response section.
All in all, it’s a proper rock show, and it didn’t disappoint old-school fans, as the British rocker ripped through nearly every song on the album that made him a global star nearly two decades ago — 2003 of Permission to Land.
Hawkins may be in his late 40s, but he sounds better than ever, including absurdly high notes on many of the album’s bettors, including Black Shug, Get Your Hands off My Woman and Growing on Me. I was.
Interspersed between the classics were a few new songs, which also hit hard, but starting with a very surprising song considering it was only mid-October. It wasn’t quite as intense as the encore we had — Christmas time (Don’t Let the Bells End).
Like on Christmas Eve before Darkness wrapped up with one of their heaviest tracks, Love On The Rocks With No Ice, the crowd was singing along.
