Two killed in balloon accident in Turkey

Two Spanish tourists have been killed and three injured in Cappadocia, Turkey.

The balloon took off from the Avanos district at sunrise on Tuesday, the governor of Nevsehir province said.

“Two Spanish nationals lost their lives and three Spanish citizens were injured during the landing of a balloon carrying 28 passengers and two crew members,” he said in a statement.

“Treatment of the injured continues in the city’s hospitals and is not life-threatening.

Initial assessments indicated that the accident was caused by an unexpected increase in wind speed, the statement said.

Hot air balloon rides are one of the most popular activities in the Cappadocia region, flying over canyons and volcanic ‘fairy chimneys’.
